Get help using the Family Sign Language website

We are sorry that you are experiencing problems the Family Sign Language website. Here you will find some examples of common problems and how to resolve them.

Q. THE WEBSITE DOES NOT WORK ON MY COMPUTER.

To access the website, please make sure your computer and internet connection meet the following minimum system requirements:

Adobe Flash Player is also needed to view the website. Please check that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed on your system. This is downloadable from www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

Q. I CAN’T ENTER THE WEBSITE. WHAT CAN I DO?

After making sure your system meets minimum requirements as detailed above you may need to allow pop ups to access the website.

You should be prompted to allow pop ups on your computer when you click on the enter website button on the welcome page. A pale yellow bar will appear at the top of the screen which will ask you to allow pop ups. Click to allow pop ups and then re click the enter website button. The best option for this website is to click on – always allow pop ups for the site – so that you will be able to visit the website again.

If the yellow bar does not appear, go to the tools function in the menu bar of your browser window and select the pop up blocker option to modify your settings.

Q. HOW CAN I ACCESS THE SITE IN BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL)?

You can access the website in three ways:

  1. In BSL – to switch to watch in BSL click the BSL hand icon on each section page.
  2. With subtitles – switch the subtitles on or off by clicking the subtitles icon on each section page.
  3. English summary text – This can be read by clicking on the speech bubble icon on each section page.

Q. THE VIDEO IS SLOW AND JERKY ON MY COMPUTER.

The Family Sign Language website has a large amount of video content and needs a strong broadband connection. You may find it works better on an individual connection rather than a network connection.

Also close down other web pages you have open to allow your computer to download the video quicker.

Q. I CAN’T HEAR ANYTHING.

Make sure you have your computer speakers enabled and if you are using headphones make sure these are connected to your computer.

Note – Within the Family Life section the family clips do not have sound.

Q. I CAN’T ZOOM IN TO THE PRESENTERS.

There is no zoom function on the website.

Q. I CAN’T CLOSE THE SITE DOWN.

The website will launch as a new full screen window. There should be a red cross at the top right hand corner of your browser window. If the red cross is not visible you can close the window manually on your keyboard by pressing and holding the Ctrl key and F4.
